The final performance scheduled for the 25th Anniversary Season of Music for the Lunch Bunch series is Wednesday, August 12 at 12:15pm at First Presbyterian Church in Smithfield. Nate Leyland will perform on cello and Howard Kim will perform on piano.

Nathan Leyland, born in Butler, Pennsylvania, later moved to Lynchburg, Virginia and began his cello studies in the public schools at the age of nine. After moving to Ohio he began studies with Richard Bell, associate principal cellist with the Columbus Symphony Orchestra and in Connecticut studied with Laura Kane, former principal cellist of the Hartford Symphony. Nathan attended the Manhattan School of Music where he studied with Tchaikovsky Competition gold medalist Nathaniel Rosen, a former student and teaching assistant to the late Gregor Piatigorsky. Mr. Leyland has performed as soloist with the Hartford Symphony , Manchester Symphony Orchestra, The Southeastern Ohio Symphony Orchestra, Des Moines Symphony Orchestra, and the Welsh Hills Chamber Orchestra. He began his professional career at the age of 20 by becoming the cellist in the Pioneer String Quartet of the Des Moines Symphony Orchestra. In addition to that appointment, he was also the symphony’s principal cellist. Mr. Leyland moved to North Carolina in 2001 and began performing regularly with some of the areas professional ensembles such as the Carolina Ballet, North Carolina Opera, North Carolina Master Chorale, and Durham Choral Society. Currently, he is the principal cellist of the Raleigh Symphony Orchestra, the Fayetteville Symphony and the Tar River Symphony Orchestra and is a member of the Chamber Orchestra of the Triangle and the Mallarme Chamber Players. Nathan enjoys performing with his wife Anne, and spending time with their two boys Max and Sean and four cats.

Howard Kim: A native of Los Angeles, California, Howard Kim received his early piano training from master teacher Dorothy Hwang at the R.D. Colburn School of Performing Arts. He earned his Bachelor of Arts in Piano Performance from the University of California-Los Angeles, studying under Antoinette Perry and Aube Tzerko. While completing the Master of Music and Doctor of Musical Arts degrees in Piano Performance and Literature under the tutelage of Rebecca Penneys at the Eastman School of Music, he was awarded the Performer’s Certificate. Dr. Kim has won numerous awards and honors, including 2nd Place and Audience Favorite Prize at the Josef Hofmann International Piano Competition and the Ozelle Rubenstein Award for Chamber Music at the Young Artists’ Peninsula Music Festival as part of the Colburn Piano Quintet. He has performed duo piano concerts with Canadian pianist Rebekah Jordan-Miller in New York, Florida, and Canada. He has been the featured soloist with the Colburn Chamber Orchestra, the Marina del Rey-Westchester Symphony Orchestra, Southeastern University Chamber Orchestra, and the Imperial Symphony Orchestra. He is currently Assistant Professor of Music at Fayetteville State University and the keyboardist for the Fayetteville Symphony Orchestra, having previously served as a guest lecturer at Eastman School of Music’s Summer Piano Festival and as a faculty member of Nazareth College and Southeastern University.

The Music for the Lunch Bunch is a series of summer concerts held every Wednesday, at 12:15 pm, featuring local artists performing a variety of music, with particular emphasis on classical music. The concert series is grassroots funded by the Johnston County Arts Council and the North Carolina Arts Council. There is no admission charge but donations are accepted.
