The fourth annual Honey Bowl was a wet one. The rain forced many fans to stay home, but the die hards were out and rooting for their teams. Both West and South were coming off convincing victories. West scored 37 points in their win against Overhills and South scored over 50 points of their own in their victory over Southern Lee. Until the rainfall, this game hoped to showcase to high powered offenses. When all was said and done, only 17 points total were scored by both teams.

West seemed to have things under control early when CJ Frederick took the ball in the endzone for his third touchdown of the young season. With a 7-0 lead and no end to the rain in site, West had control of the game. West’s defense went to work in the first as well, recovering a fumble with under a minute left.

In the second quarter, South had their first chance at putting points on the board. With about four minutes off the clock in the second quarter the Trojans intercepted a Chris Ferguson pass. South’s offense drove the ball into the redzone on a long pass play.

On the ensuing set of downs West had an impressive stop. On fourth down the Trojans set up for a 26 yard field goal and were unsuccessful, leaving the score at 7-0 in favor of West.

At halftime the West Johnston band took the field in full regalia. Prior to the game the band director, Lance Britt, found himself in a “hairy” situation. A couple of the boys in the band had let their hair grow too long and Britt broke out his hair trimmers adding barber to his résumé. The boys were clean cut and ready for the show.

In the second half West was hampered by numerous penalties and miscues. The Cats also had woes in their punting game making fourth downs a guessing game. Chris Ferguson was the bright spot of the punting game with one attempt which landed inside the 20 yard line.

As the third quarter was nearing an end, West converted a 4th and 2 on a hand off to Frederick. The Cats then gave the ball back to CJ and he broke out for a 52 yard run. However, the Cats were called for a block in the back and the score was called back. West never got back into the endzone and the penalty ended up being extremely costly.

South continued to go to the air, despite the wet conditions, and finally put points on the board with just under six minutes left. E. Herrera was successful on the point after attempt and the score was tied at 7-7.

With little time left on the clock and the score notched at 7-7 this game looked like it would be going into overtime. However, South was not ready to concede the extra time. The Trojans offense drove the ball down the field and got their team inside the 20 yard line. With just nine seconds left, South attempted a field goal. The kick went through the uprights and the referees signaled it was good, but no time ticked off the clock. South’s celebration stopped abruptly when they realized that West had called a timeout just before the ball was snapped. The points were taken off the scoreboard and the game was still tied. South was forced to take another shot at the field goal. Herrera lined up for his second attempt and kicked it through the uprights. South had taken the lead 10-7.

With just seconds left, the Cats lined up to receive. The kickoff didn’t go far on a soggy Wildcat field. West made a final effort, but they were unsuccessful. South had taken back the Honey Bowl.

Frederick finished the night with 78 yards on 21 rushing attempts and West’s only touchdown. South’s D. Williams scored the only touchdown for South and had 78 total yards receiving.
