The five soft chimes let me know the coffee was ready. My wife had prepared our dog Sam’s water bowl with the required five pieces of ice. I slipped the house key in my pocket just to be on the safe side, and after pouring the coffee, away we went.

It has been a long, humid, mosquito filled summer. There hasn’t been many evenings for sitting and grinning this year. But finally just like a fever that has run its course the weather co-operated and the humidity broke. We headed for the front porch faster than the kids in the neighborhood had chased the ice cream truck in August.

My old rocking chair gave a soft grunt of recognition as I eased myself down and put her in first gear. The conversation started with the usual comments on the growth of the River birch trees. We have three and of course, they all have names. Then we switched over to the hopes and plans of landscaping. I swear that if I ever began a fall season and was able to look out over what I had done, instead of gazing out at what I still hoped to do, I believe both my wife and I would pass clean out from the excitement.

What is it about a front porch rocking chair that attracts spiders? They seem to love sitting and grinning as much as I do. I can’t stand the ugly things, and I just flat out refuse to share my chair with one. I mean it’s not like we sneak out here. They have plenty of advanced warning that we’re coming, and it seems to me they could share the seat and clear out for just a little while. You know?

I must have jumped three feet straight up when I saw the selfish spider that wanted to hog my rocker. My coffee went all over poor Sam, and even after cleaning him up, I noticed he kept a wary eye on me, and gave my rocker and me plenty of leeway with each pass the rest of the sitting and grinning episode.

We had the usual assortment of passersby, we would wave a howdy, and Sam would give his customary “Harrumph”, which if you have ever heard it is a true bark of distinction. Overall, it was a very nice evening, except for the spider. I’ll be right back.
