Johnston Health has named an interim chief executive officer.

Charles W. Elliott Jr., 57, a native of Atlanta, Ga., will begin his duties today at Johnston Medical Center-Smithfield. He will fill the vacancy left by former CEO Kevin Rogols.

Elliott will remain in the position while QHR, Johnston Health’s management company, searches for a permanent successor.

In all, Elliott has 33 years of experience in managing hospitals.

From March until early September, he was interim CEO for a surgical specialty hospital in Denver, Colo. Prior to that job, he was the CEO for six and a half years at Rowan Regional Medical Hospital Center in Salisbury, a 268-bed hospital.

From 1996 till ’02, Elliott was a group vice president for QHR. During his tenure, he worked with Johnston Memorial Hospital (now Johnston Medical Center-Smithfield) and members of the hospital board.

“I’m looking forward to working with Johnston Health as the interim CEO,” he said.

Elliott has a master’s degree in business administration from Golden Gate University in San Francisco, and a master’s degree in health administration from Georgia State University in Atlanta. He earned his bachelor’s degree from Furman University in Greenville, S.C.

Elliott is a retired lieutenant colonel of the U.S. Army Reserve.

He and his wife, Deborah, a registered nurse, have a grown son and daughter. The couple lives in Salisbury, but will move temporarily to Johnston County during his stint as interim CEO.
