Swift Creek Sweepstakes opened back in June and has been steadily building up its clientele ever since. Don’t know what an Internet sweepstakes business is? Here’s how it works – Swift Creek has 30 computers available on site. Customers can purchase Internet time, also known as sweepstakes points, to browse the Internet or play games. The computers at Swift Creek each have 21 games, including 19 slots and two Keno games. There are also four stand up machines on site with 12 games on each. One point will set you back a penny, so for $1 worth of Internet time you receive 100 points which you then can put forth into the games. At the end of your purchased time, if your points are higher than the initial investment you made, you can redeem those points for cash. According to owner John Swartz, points can be redeemed for up to $2,500.
Internet Sweepstakes, or Cafés, as they are also called, have been cropping up all over the state within the past two years. And although some have questioned the legality of its operations, the businesses have proved thus far to be legal, mainly because the chances of winning are predetermined, similar to a raffle or the lottery - not random like in gambling.
The participants, who are about 75 percent women and mostly age 45 and over, can also help themselves to free drinks and snacks anytime, as well as free pizza and cash giveaways on Saturday nights. There is an ATM on site, as well as a fax and copy service. Smoking is allowed, and no one under 18 is eligible to play.
