West Johnston’s boy’s soccer team took on the first place squad in the Greater Neuse River Conference, Southeast Raleigh, on Sept. 30. SE Raleigh entered the match-up undefeated and West entered the game at 2-4 in conference play. The Wildcats were looking to knock off the one seed to help them get back to the state playoffs for a fourth straight year.

West played inspired defense led by senior goalie Austin Tucker throughout the first half. West withstood a barrage of shots on goal and held the Bulldogs at bay until the final minutes of the half. SE Raleigh was able to cross the ball in front of the goal and finish it on the back side of the net. The Bulldogs had taken advantage of their scoring opportunity and lead at half 1-0.

“I tell our guys never to worry about who we play only about how we play. If we play West soccer we should recognize our success,” said Coach Ken Sweat of his team’s match up with the top team in the GNRC.

Starting the second half, it was clear West would need to continue its strong defense and create opportunities to score. West began to have more shots on goal including a few direct kicks. At the 20 minute mark West got their best chance to score when they sent a corner kick in front of the Bulldogs’ goal and connected on a header toward the goal. SE Raleigh made the save, and West would have to continue to try to break down the #1 team’s defense.

West continued to see opportunities in the second half, including a couple direct kicks and an open shot on goal, but miscues and bad luck would prevent West from getting on the scoreboard. SE Raleigh beat West 1-0.

“I was really proud of our team's performance. We played with intensity and executed well. We just weren't able to get any good scoring opportunities. Our defense also played a great game limiting SE Raleigh's opportunities,” said Sweat of his team’s efforts.

Southeast Raleigh continues to sit atop the GNRC with Clayton a very close second. West is currently in a tie for sixth with Knightdale, leaving them one spot back from another state playoff appearance.

“I believe the second half of our conference season will be quite different than the first,” said Sweat. “We have to start scoring some goals if we want to make the state playoffs for the 4th straight year.”

West is in action again on Oct. 12 at home against East Wake.
