“Fight Like a Girl” In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Curves of Cleveland is selling the “Fight Like a Girl” tee shirts. All proceeds go to the American Cancer Society. Breast Cancer is a leading cause of death among women. The NC Curves Co-op, consisting of clubs located throughout the Triangle has raised a whopping $30,000 for the annual Breast Cancer Walk that was held on Saturday Oct. 3, 2009. In April 2009, Health Magazine named Curves one of America’s Healthiest Gyms. There’s never been a better time to join Curves of Cleveland than during Breast Cancer Awareness Month. ‘Hee-Haw Salute’ at Benson Little Theatre Come on down to “Kornfield Kounty” as the Benson Little Theatre presents “Hee Haw Salute.” It is going to be the show of the season! “Hee Haw” is coming to Benson as a tribute to the original variety show and is written and directed by Richard Davis. This was the last of the successful variety shows on TV and by far the most successful country music show on television. You can relive that nostalgic slice of our country’s culture by attending the show on Saturday, Oct. 17 at 8 p.m. or Sunday, Oct. 18 at 3 p.m. at the W. J. Rescues & Runways Fashion Show maurices at Clayton Town Centre, 933 Town Centre Blvd., will be hosting a Rescues & Runways Fashion Show on Oct. 17 at 4 p.m. Admission is free. The unique Rescues & Runways fashion show will feature models walking the runway with the latest fall looks from maurices, along with a pet that is available for adoption. JCC plans spring trip to Mexico Johnston Community College is planning a seven-day trip to the Yucatan of Mexico May 19-25, 2010. The trip is open to students, employees, and the community. The trip has been packaged through Casterbridge Tours and includes stops in Merida, Uxmal, Kabah, Chichen-Itza, Tulum, Playa del Carmen, and guided tours of Mayan ruins and museums. A non-refundable deposit of $500 is due by Oct. 21. The remaining balance of the trip will be determined based on the number of participants and will be due in January 2010. The trip price includes round trip airfare, bilingual tour guide, some meals, hotel accommodations, private, first-class motor coach for traveling throughout the Yucatan, all excursion and admissions fees, gratuities and taxes. Johnston County Schools Technology Showcase The public is invited to attend the Ninth Annual Johnston County Schools Technology Showcase on Monday, Oct. 26. The event will be held in the Great Hall at Johnston Community College in Smithfield, NC and is scheduled to last from 4 p.m. until 6 p.m. The Technology Showcase is an opportunity for us to share with the citizens of our community, some of the things the students in our schools are doing with technology and technology resources.

Fall Fest scheduled Oct. 30 The public is invited to shop for gifts and other items at Fall Fest, a crafts fair sponsored annually by Johnston Health at the Johnston Medical Mall in Smithfield. The free event takes place from 11:30 a.m. till 3 p.m. on Oct. 30 in the main hallway of the mall. Vendors have until Oct. 16 to register for sales space. Fees are nominal. Veteran’s Day Celebration Johnston County Schools is pleased to be able to host the annual Veteran's Day Celebration on Nov. 11 at 11 a.m. at Smithfield Selma High School. We are creating another DVD to showcase our veterans who are living and from Johnston County or currently live in Johnston County. If you have a family member or friend who is a veteran and they have NOT turned in a photo to Steve Purvis in the past, please ask them to send us a photo of themselves in uniform so we can honor them on video. Golf Tournament to benefit Cleveland Wildcats The 2009 Cleveland Wildcats Golf Classic will be held on Friday, Nov. 13 at Reedy Creek Golf Course. The day will begin at 11 a.m. with registration, followed by a 12 p.m. Shotgun start. A catered dinner will round out the day at 5 p.m. Players may enter individually or as a team. Sponsors are also being accepted. Entries must be mailed in by Nov. 6, but team entries will be accepted up to the tournament date provided there is room. Clayton High Class Reunion The Clayton High School Class of 1984 will hold its 25th class reunion on Nov. 14 at Pine Hollow Golf Course in Clayton.
