Cleveland incorporation meeting A meeting has been scheduled by local residents for Cleveland community members interested in discussing the idea of incorporation. The initial meeting will be held on Oct. 22 at 6 p.m. at Golden Corral, located at 60 Son-Lan Parkway. The meeting is intended to elect leaders, set up committees and further discuss the idea of incorporating the 40/42 area. For more information visit www.clevelandschool.webs.com.

“Fight Like a Girl” In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Curves of Cleveland is selling the “Fight Like a Girl” tee shirts. All proceeds go to the American Cancer Society. Breast Cancer is a leading cause of death among women. The NC Curves Co-op, consisting of clubs located throughout the Triangle has raised a whopping $30,000 for the annual Breast Cancer Walk that was held on Saturday Oct. 3, 2009. In April 2009, Health Magazine named Curves one of America’s Healthiest Gyms. There’s never been a better time to join Curves of Cleveland than during Breast Cancer Awareness Month. TRINITY Sunday Morning Celebration Every week beginning Oct. 18 @ The Kids' Clubhouse , Coats Commercial Drive in Cleveland (behind the new Dollar General). 9:30 a.m. FamJam Kid-appropriate worship and creative/interactive teaching. It's for children in grades K - 5 to experience with their whole family. 10 a.m. Worship Dress is casual. Music is guitar and vocals driven. Dave's preaching is Biblical, relevant, and fresh. He'll share his life and challenge you to follow Jesus with yours. (As always, we'll have great coffee and refreshments that you can enjoy through the morning including at worship.) 10 a.m. Kids' Play The staff of the Kids' Clubhouse will help us to provide a safe and fun environment for supervised play. Johnston County Schools Mentoring Conference Announcement Are you interested in making a difference in the lives of others? Do you have a desire to build and improve the community in which you live? Then you need to attend the “Mentoring Matters Conference”! This invitation has been sent out to community agencies, businesses, local government, the Faith community, schools, etc. Anyone interested in mentoring and providing services for youth are welcome. Johnston County Schools Technology Showcase The public is invited to attend the Ninth Annual Johnston County Schools Technology Showcase on Monday, Oct. 26. The event will be held in the Great Hall at Johnston Community College in Smithfield, NC and is scheduled to last from 4 p.m. until 6 p.m. The Technology Showcase is an opportunity for us to share with the citizens of our community, some of the things the students in our schools are doing with technology and technology resources.

Fall Fest scheduled Oct. 30 The public is invited to shop for gifts and other items at Fall Fest, a crafts fair sponsored annually by Johnston Health at the Johnston Medical Mall in Smithfield. Carnival at Capital Church The Capital Church is hosting their annual Capital Carnival on Saturday, Oct. 31 from 6 to 9 p.m. The entire event is free. Parenting Class 101 A parenting class will be held for expecting parents or new parents with children ages birth to five years. Holidays Craft Fair Garner United Methodist Church, 201 Methodist Drive in Garner, is having their 5th annual Homespun Holidays Craft Fair on Saturday, Nov. 7, from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. There will be a wide variety of homemade and very unique crafts this year for your one-stop shopping. There will be no commercial vendors. A full service concession stand will be open all day serving BBQ, Hot Dogs, homemade Brunswick Stew, Chips, Candy and Drinks. Door prizes that are donated by our wonderful vendors will be given away during the fair – you could be a lucky winner! Bring a neighbor to have a great lunch, enjoy browsing through all the booths and find that perfect Christmas gift for everyone on your list. Color Me Healthy Workshop Color Me Healthy is a program developed to reach children ages four and five with fun, innovative, interactive learning opportunities that encourage physical activity and healthy eating. Debbie Stroud of the County Cooperative Extension Service and Kimetha Elliot of the Johnston County Health Department are teaming up to provide a Color Me Healthy workshop on Saturday, Nov. 7 from 8:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. The workshop will take place at the Johnston County Agricultural Center Auditorium located at 2736 NC 210 Hwy, Smithfield NC 27577. Childcare providers working with 4 and 5 year old children are eligible to register. Participants will receive all the materials needed to carry the program in their classroom. Holiday arts and crafts The Literary Guild at Johnston Community College is planning its second annual Christmas/Holiday arts and crafts show from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 7. The event will be held in the lobby of the Paul A. Johnston Auditorium and is a fundraiser for the College’s Literary Guild. The club is looking for crafters, artists, potters, sculptors, weavers, quilters and other hobbyists to showcase their wares for the sale. The cost is $40 to rent space. Veteran’s Day Celebration Johnston County Schools is pleased to be able to host the annual Veteran's Day Celebration on Nov. 11 at 11 a.m. at Smithfield Selma High School. We are creating another DVD to showcase our veterans who are living and from Johnston County or currently live in Johnston County. If you have a family member or friend who is a veteran and they have NOT turned in a photo to Steve Purvis in the past, please ask them to send us a photo of themselves in uniform so we can honor them on video. Photos can be delivered to the Office of Public Information at the Evander S. Simpson Building on Hwy. 70 or at the Video Production Shop at Facility Services on Hwy 70/Hwy 210 in West Smithfield. Golf Tournament to benefit Cleveland Wildcats The 2009 Cleveland Wildcats Golf Classic will be held on Friday, Nov. 13 at Reedy Creek Golf Course. The day will begin at 11 a.m. with registration, followed by a 12 p.m. Shotgun start. A catered dinner will round out the day at 5 p.m. Players may enter individually or as a team. Sponsors are also being accepted. Entries must be mailed in by Nov. 6, but team entries will be accepted up to the tournament date provided there is room. Clayton High Class Reunion The Clayton High School Class of 1984 will hold its 25th class reunion on Nov. 14 at Pine Hollow Golf Course in Clayton. Events will begin with a social hour at 7; dinner at 8; followed by a DJ until 12. Cash bar will be available. The cost to attend is $20/person.
