One local suspect has been questioned in the break-in of the Cleveland Library but no charges have been filed. Detectives with the Johnston County Sheriff's Office have at least one additional suspect they want to interview.

Director of the library, Ron Still, said a break-in at the warehouse portion of the Cleveland Library occurred sometime between Thursday night and Friday morning, Dec. 17 and 18.

Still said that volunteers worked at the library until closing on Thursday and felt the building was secured. When Bob Shillings, a volunteer, returned on Friday morning he discovered the bay door in the back of the building was open.

Still said the door had not been used since summer and they aren't sure if the suspects gained entry through the door or came in through the roof from an adjoining corridor.

"We are mystified about how it happened," he said. "We're stumped."

Still said because the library warehouse contains thousands of books they cannot tell at this time is anything is missing.

The perpetrators only gained access to the warehouse which is used for bar coding and prepping of books and they did not have access to the actual library or to the computer lab.

"We've turned it all over to the Johnston County Sheriff's Office," said Still. "It's not going to cause any major damage with the library."

With over 65,000 books and videos, they boast as the fastest growing public library in the state. Located in the rear of Peddler's Village in the 40/42 community, the Cleveland Library is an offshoot of Basic Needs Ministry.
