Johnston County Arts Council announces Arts and Food Festival

The Johnston County Arts Council is preparing to host its First Annual Arts and Food Festival Gala at 6:30 p.m. Friday, April 30 at the Johnston County Agricultural Auditorium.

The fundraiser will generate monies to assist the Arts Council with funding for the 2010 Artists-in-the-Schools program, in providing scholarships for Johnston Community College students studying Fine Arts, and free community programming including; Johnston County Reads, monthly plein-air paint outs, student art exhibits as well as the 26th season of Music for the Lunch Bunch.

Tickets are $25 each and attendees will be treated to sample dishes from 12 of Johnston County’s finest restaurants including, Skylines Café, Clayton Steakhouse, La Cocina, Casey’s Catering, and Meadow Village Restaurant. Participating restaurants will be vying for Best Presentation, Best Entrée and Best Dessert as awarded by local food critic Andrea Weigl of the News and Observer. Attendees will have the opportunity to vote for ‘People’s Choice Award’ of Best Restaurant.

The results of the Johnston County Arts Council juried art show will also be announced at the Arts and Food Festival. Up to 50 pieces of local artwork will be on display and available for purchase from Johnston County’s most talented visual artists. Rachel Berry will serve as juror and will present the cash prizes to winning artists. Rachel Berry graduated from Davidson College in 2008 with a B.A. in art history. She is currently Director of Programs and Exhibitions at Visual Art Exchange (VAE) in Raleigh, where she has coordinated over 60 exhibits. She has curated numerous shows including Window-Down: Beyond Street Art and eNTER aCTION, which featured the work of five new media artists. Most recently she co-curated dual/FOCUS, an exhibition of printmakers and photographers at the Block Gallery in Raleigh. Attendees will also have the opportunity to vote for ‘People’s Choice Award’ for best artwork.
