Johnston Community College will offer the following self-supporting classes. For information on how to pre-register, call the registration office at 919-209-2168. Preregistration is required. Space is limited. Textbooks, if required, can be purchased at the main campus Bookstore. These self-supporting classes are non-fee exempt. All class participants must pay the registration fee. No refunds are permitted unless the college cancels the class.

Adult Piano Instruction

Learn to play the piano through group instruction in the college’s Continuing Education piano lab. The classes will meet on Mondays, May 10 - July 26 from 9 – 11 a.m. (no class on May 31st and July 5th) or on Thursdays, May 13 - July 15 from 6 – 8 p.m. in Room 130 in the Arts Building on the main campus in Smithfield.

The cost of each class is $48. The purchase of a textbook, The Older Beginner Piano Course, is required and costs approximately $10.

Beginner Middle Eastern Dance

This class is for ladies of all ages, shapes and sizes who have little or no dance experience. We will learn to differentiate between styles of Middle Eastern dance and learn basic technique and movements for tribal style dance and improvisational performance. Learning Middle Eastern dance is a great way to get fit and stay fit while having fun! The class will meet on Tuesdays, May 11 - June 15 from 7 – 8 p.m. in the Smith Building, G120 on the main campus. The cost of the class is $20. Optional purchase of zils (finger cymbals).

Clothing Construction

Learn how to sew for your family, friends and yourself. Sewing machines are provided. The classes will meet on Mondays, May 17 – Aug. 2 (no class on July 5) from 6:30 - 9:30 p.m. or on Tuesdays, May 18 – Aug. 3 (no class on July 6) from 9 – 12 p.m. or from 6:30-9:30 p.m. in the Elsee Building, Room 108 on the main campus. The cost of each class is $90. Needed supplies will be discussed in the first class.

Introduction to Sign Language

Basic signs and structure of communication between hearing and non-hearing/hearing impaired. The class will meet on Tuesdays, May 18 – Aug. 3, 6 p.m. – 8 p.m. at the JCC Cleveland Center. The cost of the class is $65. The purchase of a textbook, Signing Made Easy, is required and costs approximately $15.

Introduction to Sign Language II

Students will learn a combination of ASL and signing based on English grammar to effectively communicate with hearing and non-hearing/hearing impaired. Introduction to Sign Language is a pre-requisite. The class will meet on Thursdays, May 20 – Aug. 5, from 6 p.m. – 8 p.m. at the JCC Cleveland Center. The cost of the class is $65. The purchase of a textbook, Signing Made Easy, is required and costs approximately $15.

Social Etiquette

Talent, education and experience are not enough to get ahead. Manners and decorum add to your cred¬ibility. Learn to master the art of social etiquette – and have some fun along the way. Among the topics are: courtesy & rapport building-makes everyone comfort¬able; avoiding awkward introductions; handling small talk; impressions & appearances – here’s looking at you; formal & informal dining; gratitude & thank you go a long way; and international etiquette. Remember good manners never go out of style! The class will meet on Tuesdays, May 18 - July 6 from 7 – 9 p.m. at the JCC Cleveland Center. The cost of the class is $55. The purchase of a textbook, Etiquette Essentials for Success at Work, is required.

Conversational Spanish I for Everyday Use

Come join the class for fun and a new adventure. The class will meet on Wednesdays, May 19 - July 21 from 9 a.m. – 12 p.m. at the JCC Cleveland Center. The cost of the class is $115. The purchase of a textbook, Spanish Now, is required.

Concealed Carry Handgun Training

This class will give you the certification you need to obtain a concealed carry permit from your local sheriff’s office. Classes are held at the Howell Woods Environmental Learning Center in Four Oaks. For more information, visit our website at www.johnstoncc.edu. The cost of the class is $60.

Motorcycle Safety Program

Johnston Community College offers Motorcycle Rider courses for beginners from March to mid-December. The course, co-sponsored by the North Carolina Motorcycle Safety Education Program, is designed to instruct beginning riders on motorcycle safety, proper riding and street skills. With successful completion, the participant will be exempt from the driving portion of the DMV requirements for a motorcycle endorsement. Motorcycles and helmets are furnished. The class meets for 22 hours on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. For additional information, including class dates, visit our website at www.johnstoncc.edu. The cost of the class is $125.

Defensive Driving Program

If you have been charged with a traffic violation, you may be eligible to take one of the defensive driving courses offered at Johnston Community College. These courses are offered in conjunction with the Johnston County District Attorney’s Office and the Safety and Health Council of North Carolina.
