This month, the award goes to Charlene Butala, Autism Specialist. She was nominated by parents and colleagues, alike. Below are the nominations as they were received.

Charlene Butala is helping Johnston County go from good to great through her hard work and commitment to improve the education of those affected by autism. Mrs. Butala not only works directly with the students, but also works with the teachers to increase their effectiveness in teaching children with autism. Her experience in the field of autism, and her willingness to go above and beyond, makes her a shining star. Since starting in Johnston County a few years ago, she has made a positive impact in the EC program for many children. As a parent of a child with autism, I know firsthand the importance of her efforts. Mrs. Butala has worked closely with my child's teacher in developing an educational plan that helps him reach his fullest potential. I know of no one who better exemplifies the personal and professional qualities that you honor through this award.

The difference Charlene makes in the lives of our children with autism is life-changing! Her positive spirit, dedication and intuit experience should be applauded daily! Charlene is a true teacher, parent and child resource with unwavering commitment despite the insurmountable caseload. She is moving our children of Johnston County move from good to excellent!

Charlene Butala is an angel from Heaven! As Johnston County’s only Autism Specialist, Charlene addresses the needs of children with autism, their families, Johnston county school teachers and administrations. She serves all elementary, middle, and high schools. Charlene is doing her best to move Johnston County forward in implementing strategies to help teachers provide supports for their students with autism.
There are many families in Johnston County who have felt disconnected and at a loss, because their children with autism learn differently or have challenging behaviors. Charlene genuinely cares for each family she comes in contact with; as well as the teachers who strive to teach their children. Charlene shows this as she works, not only as a consultant, but as a liaison, a teacher, a cheerleader, a wealth of knowledge, and a presence of calm.
Charlene Butala is an employee who makes Johnston County schools great!
