Camping with HealthQuest Looking for summer activities? HealthQuest, the wellness center of Johnston Health, is offering day camps for children (ages 5 to 12) from 7:30 a.m. till 5:30 p.m. June 14 through Aug. 20. The center is located inside the Johnston Medical Mall. Advanced Life Support classes Need to re-certify in advanced cardiac life support or pediatric advanced life support? Learning how to baby-sit, safely Want your child to learn how to handle emergencies while babysitting? Johnston Health is offering a safe-sitter course from 8:30 a.m. till 3:30 p.m. on June 29 & 30 in room 1404A of the medical mall. Targeted at children ages 11 through 13, the two-day class offers medically accurate instruction on basic childcare, lifesaving techniques and accident prevention. Come join us for “Galactic Blast” fun It will be an extraordinary week as kids of all generations (pre-school through adult) are led by “Captain Hix” from the intergalactic planet of “Teaching Us Religion,” and his helper Galileo from the planet “Gorilla the Helper.” The expedition leaders will teach guests how science and religion go hand in hand. These “out-of this-world” teachers are the featured week-long guests at White Memorial Presbyterian Church’s Vacation Bible School presentation of “Galactic Blast.” The spaceship adventure blasts off on Sunday evening, June 27 and travels the galaxy through Thursday, July 1 for five evenings from 5:30 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. A light supper will precede each interplanetary adventure and all community members are invited. The blast-off location is 1459 White Memorial Church Road, Willow Spring. In addition to learning about the Bible, there will be arts and crafts, music, games, food, and lots of fun. Celebrate Cleveland The annual Celebrate Cleveland will be held July 3 and will offer a day full of fun for the entire family. Celebrate Independence Day A Ringing-of-the-Bells Celebration will take place at the Coats Museum & Belltower, located at 3317 Old Fairground Rd., in the McGee’s Crossroads Community on July 3. The program and entertainment runs from 11:30 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. The ‘Ringing-of-the-bells’ will be at noon. American Legion Post 116 July 4 celebration Please join us for an old-fashioned 4th of July celebration at our beautiful American Legion Post facilities at 6400 Johnson Pond Road in Fuquay-Varina, on Sunday, July 4. There were be plenty of free rides and games for the kids, local bands will be playing all day, food and beverages will be available, and even some fun games for the adults like horseshoes, corn-hole, putting contest and others. The festivities start at 2 p.m. and will end at 8 p.m. Our mission at the American Legion is to support our active and retired military personnel and all of the proceeds will go towards that support. If you can, please bring an item to our donation drop-off booth to be shipped to our troops overseas. We look forward to seeing you and your families and thank you for supporting our troops!

Free Family Fun Fest Community Baptist Church will host its fifth annual FREE Family Fun Fest on Saturday, July 10 from 10 a.m. – 3 p.m. at 5771 NC Highway 42 (two blocks from CVS Pharmacy on the corner of Cleveland Road (1010) and Hwy. 42). This free family outreach event has grown in its attendance from 500 to over 1,500 people. The Family Fun Fest will include carnival booths, giant inflatables, face painting, pony rides, a petting zoo, free food, a dunk tank and plenty of prizes for your kids. VBS at Mount Zion Mount Zion United Methodist Church invites children ages three through junior high to attend the “SonQuest Rainforest” Vacation Bible School, Monday through Friday, July 12 – 16, from 6:30 to 8:45 p.m. There will be a light supper served each evening from 6 to 6:25 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall. MCAA soccer events Registrations are now open for MCAA Soccer Camp! For the first time ever MCAA is teaming up with George Tarantini Soccer School at NC State. You can register now though July 12. The camp will be offered on July 26-28 from 9 a.m. – 12 p.m. The camp cost is $100 and is being offered to boys ages 5-12. NC State will provide a bus to pick the kids up at McGee’s Middle School soccer field at 8 a.m. and will drop the kids back off at school at 12:30 p.m. Your child will need to bring a soccer ball, water bottle, have shin guards and cleats. Your child will need a sports physical for the camp to be turned in on July 16. The form can be found on www.ncstatesoccerschool.com. There will also be a girls soccer camp at McGee’s Middle School Soccer Field from July 26 - 30. Ages 6-13. GCAA Fall Rec Soccer registrations now open 2010 Fall Rec Soccer Registrations at GCAA are now open at www.gcaasoccer.com. Registrations are for U04 (under age 4) through U15 (under age 15) age groups. Important dates, fees, and details of play for each age group are also on our website. Greater Cleveland Athletic Association provides a positive recreational soccer experience for children aged 3 to 14. We strive to maintain a balance between teaching soccer skills, citizenship, sportsmanship, and healthy competition. We have minimum participation rules in all leagues to ensure that all players, no matter their skill level, become a vital part of the team. Registrations end July 17. Practices begin late August. Games start early September. Don't forget to sign up to volunteer as a coach, assistant coach, or team parent. Remember, GCAA is a community organization and run by all volunteers. The Nature of Science at Howell Woods This four-day program at Howell Woods offers students the opportunity to investigate the nature of science while participating in interactive learning experiences. The science camp is open to rising fourth and fifth graders and will be held July 19-22 from 9 a.m. - 2 p.m. The registration fee is $65. To register, contact the Continuing Education registration office at 209-2168. Musical Safari Come explore the depth and scope of music in our world. Begin with an adventure in World Drumming by learning traditional rhythms from West Africa in a collaborative drum circle. Musical Safari is open to rising sixth, seventh, and eighth grade students. The camp will be held July 19-22 from 9 a.m. – noon in the Graphic Arts Building on the main campus in Smithfield. The registration fee is $40. This four-day camp will instruct you on how to design a cover, develop a character, a series of events, create line work, work with color, and carry through a sequential theme for the making of your own comic strip. Comic Camp is open to rising sixth, seventh, and eighth grade boys. The camp will be held August 2-5 from 9 a.m. – 12 p.m. at JCC’s Cleveland Center. The registration fee is $45. Crazy Fun Art Collages & Watercolors – Girls Only Explore creative and inventive ways to make original works of art using collage and watercolor paints. The camp will be held August 2-5 from 1 p.m. – 4 p.m. at JCC’s Cleveland Center. The registration fee is $45. Sports camps at Cleveland Middle Cleveland Middle School will be hosting summer baseball and basketball camps. Each camp is open to rising 6th – 8th graders. The baseball camp will be held July 26 – 29 from 8:30 a.m. to noon. Campers should bring all baseball equipment needed to participate, as extra equipment will not be provided. The cost is $60. Call to artists for Harvest Music Festival Clayton Area Chamber of Commerce announces a call to artists for the Harvest Music Festival. Artists must live in Johnston County or be affiliated with a Johnston County Arts Organization. For more information, please contact Kim Moffett at 553-6352 or kimm@claytonchamber.com Deadline: July 15. Only electronic submissions will be accepted. Artists are invited to submit designs for the commemorative 2010 Harvest Music Festival T-shirt and additional advertisements used to promote the festival. The artwork should be a blend of the fall season, the Town of Clayton, and include a festival and music theme. All submissions/entries will be on display during the Harvest Festival and the winner will receive $250.

Up to $1,500 available to artists through grant United Arts Council of Raleigh & Wake County is now accepting applications for the 2011 Regional Artist Project Grant Program. The grant is open to emerging and established artists in Franklin, Johnston, Vance, Warren and Wake Counties. Up to $1,500 is available to support projects which will further their professional and artistic development. Completed applications are due to United Arts by September 15.
