Johnston County Schools’ employees Pamela Biggs, Chris Morgan and Beth Marcom completed their first Triathlon. The “3 Pigs Triathlon” was held at the Smithfield Recreation and Aquatic Center (SRAC) on Saturday, June 19. This triathlon consisted of a 250-yard pool swim, 14 miles on the bike on rural road, and 5K (3.1 miles) run through the community park and greenway.

While they did not participate as a team but as individuals, they each completed all three phases of the race. The athletes did, however, train together as time allowed and encouraged each other (a lot of solo training was involved as well.)

This was the first year that the “3 Little Pigs” Triathlon has been held. The 250-yard swim was in the new Smithfield Recreation and Aquatics Center in Smithfield. The bike course took us from the SRAC into rural Johnston County on a scenic but flat course. The run course was an out-and-back course that took us through Smithfield’s Community Park and onto its new Buffalo Creek Greenway and back to SRAC. The competition was coordinated by the Smithfield Parks and Recreation Department and the Rotary Club of Central Johnston County.

It was the first triathlon for these three employees, who participated because they are striving to get healthier, love the recreation, and enjoy the comradeship. Marcom, Morgan and Biggs are employed in the Curriculum, Instruction, and Accountability Department of JCS.
