Since June 29, members of the Cleveland High School Band have been voluntarily attending a one day a week, three hour Student Leadership session provided by band director, Jason Heard. On Saturday, July 3 they put some of those leadership skills into action through participation in the Greater Cleveland Celebration.
Members of the band waved to the crowd and tossed candy to participants while riding on a parade platform sponsored by Jim Cannady Plumbing, Inc. Following behind the students in the band parent association sponsored golf cart was band director Jason Heard. The golf cart which was decorated by the Cleveland Band Parent’s Association placed second in the event’s golf cart category.
After the parade a combination of fifty band parents and students spent the afternoon and evening meeting various individuals from the community and discussing their upcoming season which includes local competitions and a planned October, U.S. Scholastic Band Association (USSBA) competition in Deep Run, VA.
To help support the bands travel and associated competition expenses the Band Parents’ Association and students participated in fundraising activities throughout the afternoon and into the evening hours. One of the fundraising activities was the raffle of a large cooler with a variety of summer season products. As fate would have it, the cooler was won by Mr. Rudolph Wells, longtime resident of the Cleveland Community.
The Cleveland Band Parent’s Association continues to assist the band program through various fund raisers. Future opportunities to support this new band program include local car washes, a yard sale and other community events.
