Cleveland Library, 5533 NC HWY 42 W STE D96, Garner, is now open to the public 32 hours weekly. It will continue its regular 15 hours, Monday and Thursday evenings 6-9 and Saturdays 9-6 as its fixed schedule and will add 17 hours that will change weekly. The complete schedule is available at http://4042needs.org/library/. The extra hours, require volunteers to assist patrons.

The summer reading program deadline is Saturday, August 7. Readers of ten or more books may submit the summer reading form and will be awarded a “Library Champion” yard sign. The reading form may be downloaded from the library home page.

Volunteer Elizabeth Johnson organized 7,500 different titles for the summer beach book room. Alison LeSueur, MLS, took a break from the 14,000 book children’s library to exchange tips with her friends of the American Library Association. The library movie and audio books grew larger than several of North Carolina’s entire county collections. Volunteers are needed to reorganize the thousands of movies and audio books in the collection.

Recent donations included another 2,000 books for the children’s library; a collection of books written by conservatives; and fun books representing humor, comics, and storytelling. Volunteers are needed to prepare thousands of new books for shelving. Many of the books the library receives come with reject marks from local booksellers, which have to be cleaned. The CDs and DVDs need regular cleaning. Extra hands are necessary for maintenance tasks to keep the regular volunteers and staff focused on organization and acquisition.

During open hours, the library has an ongoing sale to raise funds – excess copies of popular titles, replaced older books, text books, 7,000 records from a private record collection, games, and toys. Donations from children’s pennies to the family’s brass and even the very personal wedding and engagement rings are coming in to keep this very large and diverse collection open in the 40/42 area. Hundreds signed up for the private library cards and access to the second largest collection in Johnston, which is backed by libraries across the country through friendly interlibrary loans.
