Oakland Presbyterian Church Daytime Vacation Bible School Oakland Presbyterian Church will host SonQuest Rainforest Vacation Bible School on Sunday, July 25 from 6 p.m. - 8 p.m. and then on Monday, July 26 -Thursday, July 29 from 8:30 a.m. - noon. The Sunday night event will be a Kick-Off for the entire family. VBS is open to children ages Pre-K (age 4) through rising 5th Graders. Each child will receive a t-shirt and each family will receive a music CD full of the VBS music. Registration is open to the public. Benefit Ride for Harnett County Hospice Come join the Ol’ Timers Motorcycle Association for the Annual John B. Memorial Ride as we support the Hospice of Harnett County! This is a great opportunity to support those that support us in times of need. The event will be held Saturday, July 17. Registration starts at 10 a.m., kickstands up at noon. We will begin from Benson, Hwy 50/Main St. and Hwy 242 at I-95 and end at Skipper’s Restaurant. The cost is $20 for solo riders and $30 for 2-up (all you can eat buffet included). Camping with HealthQuest Looking for summer activities? HealthQuest, the wellness center of Johnston Health, is offering day camps for children (ages 5 to 12) from 7:30 a.m. till 5:30 p.m. June 14 through Aug. 20. MCAA summer camps and soccer registration Registrations for our fall 2010 soccer season are now open. They will end on Aug. 8 with late registrations closing on Aug. 14. We offer U4, U6, U8, U10, U12 and U15 leagues. We will also be offering walk up dates. Walk up dates are July 31 at McGee’s Middle School soccer from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. and Aug. 2 and 3 from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. Please visit our website www.gomcaa.com for registration information. Each child’s registration will cover a shirt, shorts and socks. Your child will also need cleats and shin guards (not provided by MCAA). We will also be offering a summer camp. The cost of the camp will be $100. The ages for the boys are 5-12. NC STATE will be at the McGee’s Middle School Soccer Field Aug. 2 - 4 from 9 a.m. – 12 p.m. The NC State Soccer Coach and his players will be hosting our camp. All details can be found on the soccer page of our website. We are also offering a girls summer soccer camp. The camp dates will be from July 26 - 30 at the McGee’s Middle School soccer field. The girl’s camp will be for ages 6-13. The cost will be $40. You can register for our fall season and our camps by logging on to www.gomcca.com. GCAA Fall Rec Soccer registrations now open 2010 Fall Rec Soccer Registrations at GCAA are now open at www.gcaasoccer.com. Registrations are for U04 (under age 4) through U15 (under age 15) age groups. Important dates, fees, and details of play for each age group are also on our website. Greater Cleveland Athletic Association provides a positive recreational soccer experience for children aged 3 to 14. We strive to maintain a balance between teaching soccer skills, citizenship, sportsmanship, and healthy competition. We have minimum participation rules in all leagues to ensure that all players, no matter their skill level, become a vital part of the team. Registrations end July 17. Practices begin late August. Games start early September. Don't forget to sign up to volunteer as a coach, assistant coach, or team parent. Remember, GCAA is a community organization and run by all volunteers. Friendly Chapel Revival Friendly Chapel PFWB Church is excited to announce our Summer Revival. Our Revival will begin Sunday, July 18 at 6 p.m. and continue nightly at 7:30 p.m. through July 21. Tyler Jernigan will be our guest speaker. This 17-year-old was called to preach at the age of seven and has a mighty anointing to reach the lost. He recently received his Local Ministerial License from the Bethany PFWB Church and is currently working on his studies toward his PFWB Conference License. 13U Cleveland Wildcats Blue holding tryouts The Cleveland Wildcats Blue 13U baseball team is looking for dedicated players and parents to complete our fall roster. Tryouts will be held on July 18 and July 31 at 3 p.m. at the Cleveland Community baseball fields, located at 8994 Cleveland School Road, Clayton, NC 27520. Players cannot turn 14 prior to May 1, 2011 to be eligible. This team is planning a trip to Wide World of Sports in Orlando, Florida in the summer of 2011. Musical Safari Come explore the depth and scope of music in our world. Begin with an adventure in World Drumming by learning traditional rhythms from West Africa in a collaborative drum circle. Musical Safari is open to rising sixth, seventh, and eighth grade students. The camp will be held July 19-22 from 9 a.m. – noon in the Graphic Arts Building on the main campus in Smithfield. The registration fee is $40. To register, contact the Continuing Education registration office at 209-2168. Sew-a-Little Students will learn to make a small quilt from beginning to end. Come join the fun quilting like grandma and great-grandma. Sew-a-Little is open to 8-17 year old students. The camp will be held July 20-22 from 1 – 5 p.m. at the main campus in Smithfield in Room 108 of the Elsee Building. The registration fee is $70. This four-day camp will instruct you on how to design a cover, develop a character, a series of events, create line work, work with color, and carry through a sequential theme for the making of your own comic strip. Comic Camp is open to rising sixth, seventh, and eighth grade boys. The camp will be held August 2-5 from 9 a.m. – 12 p.m. at JCC’s Cleveland Center. The registration fee is $45. Crazy Fun Art Collages & Watercolors – Girls Only Explore creative and inventive ways to make original works of art using collage and watercolor paints. Christmas in July Shopping Extravaganza The Clayton Youth Theater is hosting Christmas in July Shopping Extravaganza on July 24 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Clayton Center. Numerous vendors will on site showcasing their products such as purses, jewelry, hand made crafts, girls hair accessories, personalized children’s books, and much, much more! Be sure to stop by the Youth Theater booth where they will be selling tickets for a 50/50 raffle as well as offering face painting for kids. American Legion Post 116 Corn Roast, Chicken BBQ and Sock Hop The American Legion Post 116 will be hosting a Corn Roast and Chicken BBQ at the post (6400 Johnson Pond Rd., in Fuquay-Varina) on July 24 from 4:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. followed by a Sock Hop from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. Besides corn and chicken there will be boiled potatoes and slaw. You can eat in or take out. The Sock Hop will be DJ'd by 'DJ Ray in the House' with old ‘50s and ‘60s music. The cost of a plate will be $6 and the dance is $5. For a plate and dance combo the cost will be $10. Additional corn will be $1 each. Every Friday night we have karaoke and dancing for your entertainment. We have two halls for rentals, too. We're open to the public so come on down and have some old-fashioned fun!

Sports camps at Cleveland Middle Cleveland Middle School will be hosting summer baseball and basketball camps. Each camp is open to rising 6th – 8th graders. The baseball camp will be held July 26 – 29 from 8:30 a.m. to noon. Campers should bring all baseball equipment needed to participate, as extra equipment will not be provided. The cost is $60. Call to artists for Harvest Music Festival Clayton Area Chamber of Commerce announces a call to artists for the Harvest Music Festival. Artists must live in Johnston County or be affiliated with a Johnston County Arts Organization. Artists are invited to submit designs for the commemorative 2010 Harvest Music Festival T-shirt and additional advertisements used to promote the festival. The artwork should be a blend of the fall season, the Town of Clayton, and include a festival and music theme. All submissions/entries will be on display during the Harvest Festival and the winner will receive $250. Up to $1,500 available to artists through grant For assistance in applying for a Regional Artist Project Grant, a workshop is scheduled in Johnston County, Saturday, July 17, 10:30 – 11:30 a.m. at the Johnston County Arts Council, 231 E. 2nd Street, Clayton. RSVP to United Arts by emailing jmcintyre@unitedarts.org or by calling 839-1498, ext. 301. Artists from Johnston County may apply for grants up to $1,500 through the Regional Artist Grant Program administered by United Arts Council of Raleigh and Wake County to support projects that will further their professional and artistic development. United Arts is now accepting completed applications. Final deadline for submissions is 5 p.m. on September 15. Johnston County Arts Council is also now accepting applications for North Carolina Arts Council Grassroots Arts Program subgrants through Friday, August 20 at 5 p.m. Since 1977, the North Carolina Arts Council’s Grassroots Arts Program has provided North Carolina citizens access to quality arts experiences. Johnston County Arts Council serves as the North Carolina Arts Council’s partner in awarding subgrants to local organizations for arts programs in Johnston County. The Grassroots Arts Program aims to enrich the cultural life of North Carolina’s communities through the support of local arts programming that provides opportunities for every resident to experience the arts. Applications are available for non-profit organizations whose purpose is to promote and develop diverse cultural arts programming in Johnston County. Funding priority is given to qualified arts organizations (theaters, galleries, choral societies, festivals), arts in education programs conducted by qualified artists, and other community organizations that provide arts programs in the county. Grassroots funds are not generally awarded to arts organizations that receive funding through the North Carolina Arts Council’s General Support Program. Projects must occur between July 1, 2010– May 15, 2011. To be eligible for funding, non-profit organizations must be located within Johnston County. Programs will be evaluated for organizational stability, ability to generate 1:1 matching funds, audience development (size and cultural diversity), artistic quality, responsiveness to the community’s artistic needs and community outreach. Application forms and grant guidelines are available on the Johnston County Arts Council website at www.johnstoncountyarts.org. Johnston County Arts Council will also mail applications and guidelines upon request.
