What sets candidates applying for college or their first jobs apart from the rest?

Service experience, involvement in the community, and leadership. Those are qualities that students in Johnston Community College’s Rotaract Club, a service club sponsored by the Rotary Club of Central Johnston County, worked hard to develop this year.

While students participated in a variety of international projects this year, they chose to focus on Harbor, Inc., a local shelter for victims of domestic violence.

Through a series of bake sales, jewelry sales, and club competition activities, Rotaract students raised enough funds to purchase four new bunk beds and mattresses from Gallery Furniture for the shelter.

Club advisor Heather Murphy said working with Harbor and Gallery Furniture has been a great experience. “It’s nice to work with community organizations that are interested in helping each other out.”

Murphy also thanked her Rotaract students who put in the hard work to make the lives of others better. “This experience has taught them an important life lesson, and I think they really enjoyed doing it,” she said.
