Camping with HealthQuest Looking for summer activities? HealthQuest, the wellness center of Johnston Health, is offering day camps for children (ages 5 to 12) from 7:30 a.m. till 5:30 p.m. through Aug. 20. 13U Cleveland Wildcats Baseball Tryouts The 13U Cleveland Wildcats Travel baseball team, from the Cleveland community, is currently seeking dedicated families and players to fill a few spots on their fall roster. The team, which was formed in 2008 and has won numerous tournament championships, is coached by former State High School Player of the Year Shawn Moore and assistant coaches Dan Flores and John Holt. The Coaching staff has a combined 30 plus years of experience in helping kids develop their passion for baseball. MCAA summer camps and soccer registration Registrations for our fall 2010 soccer season are now open. They will end on Aug. 8 with late registrations closing on Aug. 14. We offer U4, U6, U8, U10, U12 and U15 leagues. Please visit our website at www.gomcaa.com for registration information. Each child’s registration will cover a shirt, shorts and socks. Up to $1,500 available to artists through grant Artists from Johnston County may apply for grants up to $1,500 through the Regional Artist Grant Program administered by United Arts Council of Raleigh and Wake County to support projects that will further their professional and artistic development. United Arts is now accepting completed applications. Final deadline for submissions is 5 p.m. on Sept. 15. For complete guidelines and an application go to the ‘Grants to Individuals’ link at the United Arts website www.unitedarts.org . Johnston County Arts Council is also now accepting applications for North Carolina Arts Council Grassroots Arts Program subgrants through Aug. 20 at 5 p.m. Since 1977, the North Carolina Arts Council’s Grassroots Arts Program has provided North Carolina citizens access to quality arts experiences. Johnston County Arts Council serves as the North Carolina Arts Council’s partner in awarding subgrants to local organizations for arts programs in Johnston County. The Grassroots Arts Program aims to enrich the cultural life of North Carolina’s communities through the support of local arts programming that provides opportunities for every resident to experience the arts. Applications are available for non-profit organizations whose purpose is to promote and develop diverse cultural arts programming in Johnston County. Funding priority is given to qualified arts organizations (theaters, galleries, choral societies, festivals), arts in education programs conducted by qualified artists, and other community organizations that provide arts programs in the county. Grassroots funds are not generally awarded to arts organizations that receive funding through the North Carolina Arts Council’s General Support Program. Projects must occur between July 1, 2010– May 15, 2011. To be eligible for funding, non-profit organizations must be located within Johnston County. Programs will be evaluated for organizational stability, ability to generate 1:1 matching funds, audience development (size and cultural diversity), artistic quality, responsiveness to the community’s artistic needs and community outreach. Application forms and grant guidelines are available on the Johnston County Arts Council website at www.johnstoncountyarts.org. Johnston County Arts Council will also mail applications and guidelines upon request.

Homeschooling Ministry We are excited to announce Proverbs22 Homeschooling Ministry of Fuquay-Varina Baptist Church. We are open to the community. Our goal is to provide interesting classes for the children and a support system for moms. Moms will be able to fellowship with each other and participate in a light book study. Fall semester starts Sept. 20 and ends Dec. 13. We will offer a nursery for children ages 6 months to 3 years, a two-hour Kindergarten class for pre-K and Kindergarteners, 4 and 5 year olds and two one-hour sessions for grades first through third and fourth through sixth on Mondays from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. We also will have field trips and socials to participate in. Hunter Safety Course at Mount Zion UMC Mount Zion United Methodist Church invites you to attend a NC Wildlife Resources Commission Hunter Safety Course to be held on Thursday, Aug. 26, and Friday, Aug. 27, from 6:30 to 9 p.m. and on Saturday, Aug. 28, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. There are no age restrictions, but children under the age of twelve must be accompanied by an adult. Prostate screening scheduled Johnston Health will hold its annual prostate screening from 1 p.m. - 5 p.m. on Sept. 27 in the Mohamed & Lippitt Urology Center, which is located in the Medical Arts Pavilion of Johnston Medical Center-Smithfield. It’s recommended that men over age 40 get tested for the disease. The risk of prostate cancer increases with age and is more prevalent among blacks than other races. The fee will be $15. A representative from the hospital’s business office will be available to take money and file insurance paperwork. To schedule an appointment, please call 938-7736.

GSHS ’80 Class Reunion Classmates of 1980 are inviting fellow class members and others to join us for a class get together. Applications sought for mini-grants to benefit youth groups The N.C. Youth Advisory Council of the Youth Advocacy and Involvement Office in the Department of Administration is accepting applications for mini-grants available to youth groups to conduct community projects. The application deadline is 5 p.m. Oct. 11. Up to $6,292 is available to North Carolina organizations composed of young people, ages 13 to 18, which implement programs to benefit their peers. The mini-grants will range from $100 to $500 each. Examples of projects that have received funding since the program started in 1977 include after-school tutorial programs, purchases of recreational equipment and orchestral music, an alcohol-free graduation celebration and publication of a newsletter. Requests for cost of food, entertainment, travel and salaries will not qualify for funding. The State Youth Council and the Youth Advisory Council will meet in November to review applications for awards and will announce recipients in December. YFU USA seeking host families for international students Youth For Understanding USA (YFU USA) is seeking local host families to host high school exchange students for the next school year. Host families provide a place to live and three meals a day plus the encouragement, advice and love to help their new family member through a semester or year in a new home. The students bring their own spending money and good health insurance plus the willingness to be a good family member, follow family rules and help out with family responsibilities. YFU provides local representatives who support the students and families to ensure a good experience for all involved.
