Planning session set for Mount Olive College dinner The planning session for the 2010 Johnston and Wake Counties gift support dinner for Mount Olive College will be held at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 7, at First OFWB Church of Smithfield. During the session, Jean F. Ackiss, director of Church Support at Mount Olive College will give a presentation about the College. She will also coordinate final plans for the dinner, as well as distribute the dinner literature. The 2010 Johnston and Wake Counties dinner is one of 18 being held throughout eastern North Carolina. According to Ackiss, “The dinners have provided more than 11.5 million dollars in gift support since they were started in 1963. This unrestricted gift support from Original Free Will Baptist churches helps Mount Olive College expand its services to students, the Original Free Will Baptist Church, and the region.” Mount Olive College is a private institution rooted in the liberal arts tradition with defining Christian values. The College, sponsored by the Convention of Original Free Will Baptists, has locations in Mount Olive, New Bern, Wilmington, Goldsboro, Research Triangle Park, Washington and Jacksonville. International Food Festival in Clayton Come and be a part of the 2010 International Food Festival scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 25 at St. Ann Catholic Church grounds on Hwy 70 between Clayton and Smithfield. This year’s International Food Festival will feature foods from the Philippines, Mexico, Colombia, Poland, Italy, Greece, El Salvador, Ireland, Honduras, Hungary, India, Guatemala and the USA, as well as the ever popular food venue “International Desserts.” There will be live international music and dance on stage throughout the day. Applications sought for mini-grants The N.C. Youth Advisory Council of the Youth Advocacy and Involvement Office in the Department of Administration is accepting applications for mini-grants available to youth groups to conduct community projects. The application deadline is 5 p.m. Oct. 11. Up to $6,292 is available to North Carolina organizations composed of young people, ages 13 to 18, which implement programs to benefit their peers. The mini-grants will range from $100 to $500 each. Requests for cost of food, entertainment, travel and salaries will not qualify for funding. Mount Zion UMC Golf Tournament Golfers are invited to participate in Mount Zion United Methodist Church’s Annual Golf Tournament on Friday, Oct. 15 at the RGA (Raleigh Golf Association) Golf Course on Tryon Road in Raleigh. This four person captain’s choice team tournament will begin at noon with a shotgun start. YFU USA seeking host families Youth For Understanding USA (YFU USA) is seeking local host families to host high school exchange students for the next school year. Host families provide a place to live and three meals a day plus the encouragement, advice and love to help their new family member through a semester or year in a new home. The students bring their own spending money and good health insurance plus the willingness to be a good family member, follow family rules and help out with family responsibilities. YFU provides local representatives who support the students and families to ensure a good experience for all involved.
