The new Cleveland High School football team came out Sept. 1 against the JV squad of South View. It’s always hard to tell how a new high school is going to do in their inaugural season, but Cleveland has shown that they can hold their own.

Three seconds into the game Cleveland player Brandon Hughes came up with a big hit but was seriously injured and had to be carted off the field. After the game head coach Marc Morris said that he is doing well.

The kick was pouched and Cleveland was able to jump on it and get a first down. Cleveland running back Isaac Martin took off and got a big gain, which set up the go ahead touchdown for wide receiver Donqua Williams. With 11:12 on the clock the score was 7-0 Cleveland.

After the Tigers received the ball the Cleveland defense got a big five-yard loss on second down, and on third down DB Mack Cox was able to bat the ball down to give the Tiger offense a three and out. With the Rams looking at three and out, QB Trey Joyner was able to get away with a quarterback sneak behind the defense for another Cleveland touchdown. As Joyner made the PAT field goal, the Rams were up 14-0.

At 5:53 Cox was able to come up with the interception for the Rams to bring out their offense once again. On second down Joyner found the open field and took off for yet another touchdown and after the interception Cleveland found themselves up 21-0.

With five minutes on the clock the Rams tried another pouched kick and were able to jump on it to give them another recovered kick. This set up the big pass to #10 Alex Swain to put the Rams in the red zone. Isaac Martin was able to find the touchdown after these big plays to put the Rams up 28-0.

With 4:15 on the clock the Tigers were able to get the receiver the ball and get it all the way to the 32-yard line. Two minutes later, a Tiger running back was able to break away but DB Joshua Carter stepped in to stop the touchdown. On the next play the Tigers were able to throw it up over the secondary of the Rams, giving South View their first points and bringing the score to 28-8.

In the second quarter Joyner threw a screen to receiver Andrew Daughtry who was able to make a big gain, setting up Martin for another touchdown.

The Tigers got the ball and looked at a big third down. They were able to pick it up but the next play put the ball on the ground, where Xavier Baker recovered it. From there, running back Omar Sellers was able to run it in from 25 yards out. With 6:25 left on the clock in the second quarter, the Rams found themselves with a big lead of 42-8.

In the beginning of the third quarter Alex Raines turned an unlikely third and long in to a miraculous catch and run to the endzone, bringing the score to 49-8. Joyner was perfect with his field goals.

The Rams were able to hold the Tigers at eight points for the rest of the night to give them their second win and a 2-0 for the start of the season.

Catch Cleveland in action at next week’s home game vs. C. B. Aycock on Sept. 9, where the Rams will look to keep their streak going.
